My biological family is from the Listuguj Mi\u2019gmaq First Nation, and I was adopted at birth by the Gesgapegiag First Nation. I later left home in my mid-twenties to study the arts. I moved to Fredericton, New Brunswick, because I wanted to become a graphic designer. While there, I met my partner, who lived in Halifax, so I followed her. I studied at the Nova Scotia Community College and earned my diploma in graphic design.<\/p>\r\n

What I love most about Gasp\u00e9sie are the colourful sunsets over the Appalachian mountain range, the vibrant blues and greens of the water, the fall colours, and the smell of sweetgrass along the beaches. The food is always fresh. It\u2019s where I grew up, it\u2019s my home, and it always will be. I\u2019ve rarely seen mountains like the ones in Gasp\u00e9sie anywhere else.<\/p>\r\n

I started out as an oil painter in 2004, which fueled my passion for design. After graduating, I launched my own business as a graphic designer and illustrator. I\u2019ve had the opportunity to illustrate children\u2019s books for Indigenous audiences and to work mainly with Indigenous-owned businesses on logo design. My artwork can be found in Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, the United States, and Germany.<\/p>\r\n

Today, I\u2019m pursuing studies in adult education because I hope to teach in the near future, either in the arts or in culture.<\/p>\r\n

Jessica splits her time between Halifax and Gasp\u00e9sie, where she continues to work as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator, collaborating with various organizations. This year, she lent her talent to Vivre en Gasp\u00e9sie<\/em> for the 19th edition of Journ\u00e9e de la Gasp\u00e9sie<\/em>, creating illustrations for a colouring book inspired by the Seven Sacred Teachings of Mi\u2019gmaq culture. It\u2019s her way of honouring her roots and helping Gaspesian identity shine through art.<\/p>\r\n
